On Saturday, April 15, 10 of us
boarded the "Bayou Ranger" at Bay Area Park.
We turned northward up Armand Bayou in
hopes of close-up wildlife viewing.
Some of the critters we saw were
alligators (or at least their eyes) and jumping fish, ospreys on the tops
of dead trees, night herons and egrets. Ann Brinley, the deck hand, passed out
binoculars to all, but the full moon had disappeared
behind a cloud cover, so Captain Mark Kramer used a flood
lamp to highlight animals along the way.
Mark was an excellent guide, passing on information about the area, its history, inhabitants, and hopes
for the future. "I didn't know I was supposed to learn
something!" said Rowe. Verna brought along some tasty
brownies that were very well received.
It seemed hard to realize at times
that we were actually next door to subdivisions,
chemical plants, and busy roadways.
