The Cayman Islands are famous for the spectacular diving, the beautiful islands and the wonderful people. We will learn about the some of the wonderful things that the Cayman Islands have to offer. Capt. Waldo will be bring the door prizes and promises a door prize for everyone who attends. Rumor has it there may be rum cake also!!

The Ridley sea turtle nesting season on Galveston Island is coming up. John is a long time sea turtle educator, volunteer and activist. He will let us know how the preservation efforts of HEART are working

and what volunteers can do to help.

There is a compressor on site and they have some tanks for rental. Jim will bring his BBQ pit and cook some chicken. It is a good chance to get wet. Bring kids and they can play or fish in the lake.

Guest speaker is Guest speaker is Dennis Camp. He will be doing a presentation on general equipment comparisions. This will be a good opportunity to discuss the variations in equipment available. I know that I am always looking to learn more about equipment and what differences there are in regulators, fins and BCs. Dennis represents various manufacturers and is very knowledgeable. Also, I am sure there are a lot of old salts in the club that will have an opinion or two worth sharing. We should be in for a very educational, informative, and if I know Capt Waldo…. a fun night.

We will have Dennis Deavenport with the HUPS (Houston Underwater Photographic Society) is coming to talk to us about underwater photography and show us shots from recent trips. If you were at SeaSpace 2007, it was HUPS that had that gallery of beautiful photos and Dennis was a primary contributor to the collection. This will be an informative and fun presentation.

This month we are please to have The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Heidi Watts will do a presentation on who the TMMSN are and what they do. Also, she will explain how we can participate in the program and what to do should we come across a stranded or beached dolphin. This should be a very informative and educational presentation.

Saturday - September 15th Noon until 5pm

Manvel is located at Hwy 6 and 288 South. Set up in the usual place – in the middle on the far side of the lake. Probably smoke some chicken and grill some hotdogs. Bring some chips and beverages and we will share. There is always plenty of food. Everybody is welcome – divers, non-divers… it is a great day in the sun and water. If you haven’t been to Twin Lakes – it has a fill station, they rent tanks. Also, Jim will be bringing extra tanks and stuff. You are welcome to use them so long as you pay for the refills.

General Membership Meeting - 7:00pm

This month we are please to have Moody Gardens Aquarium. Jay Reynolds has a presentation that goes over the basics of what is expected of dive volunteers. He will discuss what a typical day might be like and what volunteers can expect to do. He will talk about the different exhibits that volunteers may get to dive. Jay will cover the training program as it stands right now, and briefly discuss what he would like to see developed in the near future, i.e. a scientific diving course. Also, he will talk about some of my recent scientific diving experiences.

1st Annual Rubber Duck Race

Location: The Downtown Aquarium - 410 Bagby Street - Houston, Texas

Date: Sunday, September 30, 2007  - Time: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Purpose: To promote conservation awareness and support conservation programs.The Downtown Aquarium and The Houston Hammerheads (a dive and snorkel club promoting ocean conservation) will be hosting the 1st Annual Rubber Duck Race on Sunday, September 30th. Funds raised through this event will be used to support conservation programs and promote conservation awareness through education.Bay Area Divers will have a booth.
